Darrel Dullum
Darrel Dullum, 30, of East Helena, Mont. disappeared around 2 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009 after leaving Eagles 4040 Bar in East Helena. (Photos of the area.) Witnesses reported that Dullum appeared to be intoxicated and that he did not get into his vehicle; a bartender had reportedly taken away his keys. He was last seen with two men outside the bar. He then left the bar on foot, intending to walk to his home on the 3200 block of Trerise Road.

Dullum was reported missing at 7 p.m. on Saturday. His 1998 black GMC pickup was located in a parking lot to the south of the Eagles.

Dullum's estranged wife, Brandy Dullum, who he had been separated from for a year-and-a-half, said his disappearance was out of the ordinary. “He runs like clockwork, that’s why this is so weird to me,” she told Alana Listoe of the Helena Independent Record in December 2009.

Dullum is the father of two sons, Darren, 6, and Alex, 5.

Searches were conducted on Saturday and Sunday, and on Monday, a helicopter search was performed near Dullum's home and throughout all of East Helena.

On Friday, December 11, 2009, a baseball cap belonging to Dullum was found near a residence on the 100 block of East Pacific Street. The hat was identified by Dullum's parents.

Nearly two months later, on Saturday, February 6, 2010 Dullum’s body was found encased in ice on a sand bar in Prickly Pear Creek. Dullum's cell phone and wallet containing his identification were found on the body. The creek, which is near Main Street Park off Clark Street, is about two miles south of Dullum's home, two blocks southeast of the Eagles Bar in East Helena, and about 20 feet from where his hat was found. The area had been previously searched using dogs and divers; the dogs had shown an interest in the spot where Dullum was found, but the ice made it very difficult to search.

"But you go and look at that ice and how thick it is, it was unbelievable," East Helena Police Chief Dale Aschim told Eve Byron of the Helena Independent Record. "There were six to eight inches, and on the sides of the creek it was definitely over a foot thick."

Lewis and Clark County Coroner Mickey Nelson confirmed on February 10 that drowning was the cause of Dullum’s death, stating that there was no evidence that anyone else was involved. However, questions remain about why Dullum was near the creek.

According to Byron, "The body was found south of the bar, while Dullum's home was to the north, which puzzles [investigators]. They're not sure if Dullum, a native of East Helena, was disoriented or going someplace other than home. They also aren't sure how he would have landed in the creek, and whether he might have fallen in where he was found or somewhere upstream. The night he went missing was cold - the temperature was about 14 degrees - and it's snowed often since then, which may have covered up his tracks."

Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton told the paper, "Nothing points to [foul play] at this time. The only thing we know for sure is from the video showing that he left the bar."(Byron, Helena Independent Record, Feb. 2010.)

In February 2011, Darrel's father, Jerry Dullum, wrote an guest editorial piece for the same paper about the questions that remained in his son's case and expressing his frustration over the lack of security cameras in the area where his son was found. He wrote:
Although the coroner has not found physical evidence of foul play, foul play has not been ruled out. There are still some blood tests to be done for alcohol and drugs. The quantity and quality of the blood may not be good enough to determine anything. The state of decomposition of Darrel’s body leaves some room for doubt. The exact cause or contributing factors of death has not been determined. Was drowning criminal or accidental? There is some miscommunication about this and law enforcement is still looking for evidence and identifying and questioning people.

They have proven it is Darrel; he was not shot, stabbed or beaten, but there are still a lot of unanswered questions. Anyone with information can still call Helena Area Crime Stoppers anonymously at 443-2000; the East Helena Police or the Lewis and Clark County sheriff’s office. There is still a $1,000 reward through Crime Stoppers.

Oh, how I wish there had been cameras along Main Street, whether they belonged to the city or the county or anybody, to tell the rest of the story. Many people have been questioned, accused, wrongly accused and requestioned. There has been a lot of bar gossip, rumors and just plain lies going around. There is the second- and third-party he-said-she-said. The wrong people have been accused or questioned and the people who saw, heard or know something have not yet been found or come forward.

Countless hours of law enforcement time was wasted because there are no cameras. From everything I know, and evidence suggests, my son was not drunk or disoriented enough to walk the opposite way from home, nor do I believe he purposely jumped into waist-deep water and drowned himself.

It is far more likely he was accosted and running away. Scared? Was he drugged? Why was his hat out of the water? Was he confronted there? Was he held underwater or pushed repeatedly in? Were there other wet people around? Was there a gun pointed at him?

There are more possibilities. Because of a lack of cameras, we may never get an answer. There are three bars in a two-block area and a gas station at each end of town. There were a lot of people out on Main Street and still no one saw anything?

It wouldn’t bother me to see the city put in cameras downtown. I don’t see the cameras as an infringement on my freedom, but as security for the community.

Furthermore, I plan on contacting my legislators about a law requiring bars to put in quality outside cameras at all entrances and exits for the protection of patrons and citizens. It also needs to state that someone know how to operate the system, as this was part of the problem in our case. From reports I’ve seen, 20 to 30 percent of businesses with cameras do not know how to operate them. If there had been cameras we probably would have seen what happened to Darrel or at least we might have found him the same day instead of two months later.

How can anyone feel safe on Main Street in downtown East Helena until more questions are answered?

The toxicology results in this case have not been released.

Footnotes

On July 26, 2012, KXLH.com reported that "Brandy Dullum has been sentenced to 25 years in the Montana Women's Prison, with 15 of those years suspended, for the negligent vehicular death of her friend Devon Richetti in December 2011." The high-speed rollover crash also caused serious injury to 22-year old Leeann Stobart. Dullum was also given a 10-year suspended sentence for a negligent vehicular assault charge that will run concurrent to the first and she must pay restitution to Richetti's family for the costs of the funeral and cremation. Stobart's medical bills have not yet been addressed.

According to the paper, "in a separate rollover accident on I-15 that occurred on April 25, Dullum was sentenced to 10 years suspended, to be served consecutively for the criminal endangerment of the passenger.

Dullum's attorney Randi Hood argued that Dullum's losses and struggles with alcohol and depression warranted a lighter sentence, telling the judge, "We believe that Elkhorn, which is a 9 month treatment program as well as pre-release, which would be another six months, to be appropriate for her. Judge Kathy Seeley did not accept the recommended sentence, stating, "I'm not going to accept the plea agreement. I think you are a danger to the community. And, I am not satisfied that you appreciate what a danger you are to all of us."

Zachary Pittman with daughter, Kaili
Shortly after 11 p.m. on June 24, Zachary Pittman, 26, called his mother to say that he had gotten into a verbal argument with his sister over who would be living at the home. She called the police. When the police arrived, Pittman was gone. He had left the home with the clothes he was wearing and a backpack containing his wallet with little to no money inside and one change of clothes. Pittman, who had a three year old daughter, lived in a sparsely populated part of Pearl River, La., and did not own a car or cell phone. His mother, Christy Ragas, said her son would've had nowhere to go.

Ragas told the St. Tammany Sidell Sentry that her son had fallen on hard times. He was desperate and out of work and he had gotten mixed up in drugs. She said he was no angel, but “he was a human being and he was a good dad.” She added that they were very close and he called her often.

“Zach would never leave me no matter what,” she said.

Pittman's remains were found May 31, 2011 in a heavily wooded area of the Mossy Oak Hunting Club north of Louisiana 36, in St. Tammany and did not appear to have been buried. The remains were identified through dental records. The Coroner's Office has not yet determined the cause or manner of Pittman's death, Croft said. Because of the state of the remains, the office plans to bring in a forensic anthropologist from Louisiana State University to aid in the investigation, she said.

According to a post by Simon Barrett of Blogger News Network, "Pearl River is a small community, the population is approximately 2,000 people. It is a community where everyone knows everyone. Yet no one is talking about Zachary Pittman. It stretches my fertile imagination that a man accustomed to the area would wander off into one of the local swamps and die."

If you have any information about Zachary Pittman, please call the St. Tammany Sheriff’s Department at 985-726-7836.

07/28/12: Benjamin Fuder, 21, Whitewater, WI

Benjamin Fuder
Benjamin Fuder, a 21-year old student at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater was last seen in leaving the Hawk's Nest Bar and Grill in downtown Whitewater, Wisc., around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2012. The State Journal has reported that Fuder's friends told him to go home because he was intoxicated. It was the last time he was seen. Benjamin Fuder was reported missing at 11:37 p.m. that night.

Someone found Fuder's phone and used it to contact his girlfriend to ask how to return it to him. Fuder's girlfriend then directed him to leave it at his residence. The person put it in the mailbox anonymously, and police would like to find out where the phone was found.

It has also been reported that someone told Fuder's father, Bradley Fuder, that his son's wallet was found Saturday afternoon at the top of an outdoor staircase.

On Sunday, July 29 about 6:45 a.m., Fuder's body was found in the bottom of the Whitewater Limestone Quarry below the north rim. The quarry is just outside Whitewater's southern limits, in Walworth County, on Franklin Street just north of the Highway 12 bypass. According to the Walworth County Today, "It can be seen clearly from Highway 12." The entrance to the quarry is about one mile from the bar where Fuder was last seen.

The coroner identified the body as Fuder and pronounced him dead at the scene, and foul play was not suspected.

The Fuder family has asked for anyone with information to come forward.

According to a report by NBC15:

Some of the circumstances surrounding Benjamin's death seem mysterious--and his family says they have questions about what happened to him. "He would have had to leave the bar, get something to eat and walk over a mile past his house just to reach this point," described his brother, Shane.

To get to the quarry, Shane says he would have had to have walked way past his residence--in the dark. "He would have had to walk down the street here, no sidewalk, no lights, no houses, no reason to come here," said Shane. "Stumbled all this way, a mile past his house down this gravel road and through some really thick brush."

Family members say he knew his way home--and he wasn't depressed--so it seems unlikely that he'd have wandered to the area intentionally. That's why they think this may not have been an accident.

"This was not a slip and fall accident, this was not a suicide obviously, he was, you know, the target," said Joshua Fuder, another of Benjamin's siblings.

They say they're hoping the official investigation yields some answers for them.

They want to know if Benjamin might have been drugged.

Shane says they're having a third party conduct a toxicology report.

"We've decided not to cremate him yet," he said. "We're going to wait until we can do our own toxicology report and have someone else we supplied go over the evidence and the body and stuff. So we don't want to, you know, we're trying to stay objective trying to do this right so we don't regret anything down the road."

Benjamin Fuder is the second UW-W student in 14 months to be found deceased in the quarry.

According to the Walworth County Today, "The body of 20-year-old Mark J. Wegener, a UW-Whitewater student, was found at the bottom of the quarry May 30, 2011. Police say he left a party about 1 a.m. May 29, 2011, and was not seen again until his body was discovered. Authorities at the time said Wegener apparently fell from a 70-foot ledge. His death was ruled an accident. An autopsy revealed Wegener had a blood-alcohol content of 0.106, which would be above the legal limit to drive."

Police believe the only similarity between the two incidents is that both victims appeared to be alone.

According the same paper, there is a dirt lane, which runs under power lines, that leads to the quarry's north rim. There are posted signs advising people not to enter without permission. The road to the bottom of the quarry is gated and locked after hours. While there is no fence around the rim of the quarry, a worker told the paper that there have been no reports of people partying at the quarry or hanging out after hours. He also said that while there is a small pool of water at the bottom of the quarry, it is continually pumped and not suitable for swimming. He said the quarry is operated by Whitewater Limestone, a subsidiary of BR Amon and Mann Brothers of Elkhorn, Wisc.

Whitewater Police Chief Lisa Otterbacher confirmed to the paper that there have been no reports of incidents at the quarry.

On October 10, 2012, the Walworth County Coroner’s Office ruled the death of Benjamin Fuder an accident. According to a Press Release from the Walworth County Sheriff's Office, the cause of death was "due to a fall from the rim to the floor of the limestone quarry. The death was due to traumatic head trauma along with significant other conditions, which were the presence of ethanol, cannabinoids and psilocin. The Walworth County Sheriff's Office has concluded this investigation and finds no evidence of any criminal behavior associated with this death and agrees with the Walworth County Coroner’s Office that the manner of death was accidental."

Anyone with information should contact Walworth County Sheriff's Office Detective Troy Pagenkopf at 262-741-4426.

Jeff Buckley
Wikipedia
Jeffrey Scott "Jeff" Buckley, 31, was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist and son of folk and jazz musician Tim Buckley. After a decade in the music business and amassing loyal following of fans, he signed with Columbia Records, recruited a band, and recorded the album, Grace.

On the evening of May 29, 1997, Buckley was in Memphis after enjoying a warm 84 degree day when he spontaneously decided to go swimming in Wolf River Harbor, a slackwater channel of the Mississippi River. A roadie in Buckley's band, Keith Foti, remained on shore. Buckley had gone swimming there several times before, but this time, he was still wearing boots, all of his clothing, and singing the chorus of the song "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin. As a tugboat passed by, Foti decided to move a radio and guitar further back on the shore. When he looked at the water again, he saw that Buckley had vanished, presumably after being caught in the wake of the tugboat.

Despite a determined rescue effort, Buckley was not found until June 4, when two locals spotted his body in the Mississippi River near a riverboat. Buckley's autopsy showed no signs of drugs or alcohol in his system and the death was ruled as an accidental drowning.

The Buckley estate released a statement that reads, "Jeff Buckley's death was not "mysterious," related to drugs, alcohol, or suicide. We have a police report, a medical examiner's report, and an eye witness to prove that it was an accidental drowning, and that Mr. Buckley was in a good frame of mind prior to the accident."

Missing student found safe

Taylor Lee Franco, 19, a Hawkeye Community College student and native of Davenport, Ia., was last seen about about 5:50 a.m. on Sunday, April 1 when he mistakenly showed up at a house on the 116th block of La Porte Road in rural La Porte, Ia. Franco didn't have any connections to the home. When approached by the residents, he appeared to think it was his home but then walked off, leaving his shoes behind.

Deputies later found a vehicle registered to Franco's parents just north of the property at the dead end of a gravel road.

Crews with the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office, Iowa State Patrol, La Porte City police and fire departments used airplanes, horses and all-terrain vehicles to look for Franco on Sunday and Monday. Officers searched the Klima Wildlife Area and other woodlands, flood plains and fields west of the Cedar River around La Porte City. Franco's parents also traveled to help with the effort.

At about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 1, crews found bare footprints and dog footprints headed south from the property along the river. Authorities believe the resident's bloodhound followed Franco. Authorities also found a pair of sweatpants, but it wasn't immediately clear if they were associated with Franco.

According to the WCF Courier, those close to Franco didn't report any unusual behavior, circumstances or medical concerns, although roommates and friends did notice he had been down over the weekend.

On Monday, April 2, 2012, Joel Bishop, a La Porte City man out for his morning bike ride, found Franco. Bishop was riding his bike north along the recreational trail near the Cedar River. When he got to the gazebo just south of Weiden Road he was greeted by the missing bloodhound. Inside the gazebo, he found Franco. The student didn't have a jacket but was wearing a fleece vest. Bishop hadn't been actively looking for the missing student, but he had heard about his disappearance on the news. Things clicked.

Franco wanted to keep walking, so Bishop stayed with him, offering him peanut butter crackers and his sweatshirt, which Franco declined. He said the student seemed slightly dazed but could hold a conversation. Bishop was without his cell phone and went to two houses before finally finding some construction workers who were able to call the authorities.

Black Hawk County sheriff’s deputies and La Porte medics then caught up with Franco. Authorities said he resisted medical help and did not seem to recognize his parents. Thompson told the WCF Courier that the student wasn't making much sense.

Yet, deputies were able to piece together Franco's trail. After leaving the house on La Porte Road, the student headed east and then turned southeast at the Cedar River. From there he met up with Wolf Creek and followed that west almost into La Porte City before heading back north on the bike path.

“He made a big figure six from the house, a big lazy loop,” Thompson said.

Franco apparently shed his sweatpants along the way. He pulled a plumbers outfit from a parked vehicle north of the LaPorte Road home and donned that as he continued on his way. He apparently spent Sunday night outside.

Even though Franco’s entered the La Porte City home and took the work clothes, Thompson said he isn’t considering any criminal charges in connection with the incident.

“This is just a young man who needed help,” Thompson said.

Thompson suspects a medical issue was behind the events. He said friends were adamant that the student didn’t drink, and this was uncharacteristic for him.

Medics with La Porte City Ambulance took Franco to Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

Geoff Meisner
MISSING since 11/27/09
Kelowna, B.C., Canada
Geoffrey Meisner is missing.

Geoffrey Meisner, 33, was last seen by his wife, when he was dropped of at his vehicle that was parked at the Orchard Park Mall in Kelowna, British Columbia, on November 27, 2009. Meisner, a fighter and promoter of mixed martial arts, was scheduled to attend an event in Vernon, but everyone was surprised when he didn't show up.

Information suggests that Meisner left the parking lot in his white 2010 Ford F350 pickup and headed towards Dilworth Drive. Shortly thereafter, his vehicle arrived at the Starbucks at Hwy 97 and Leathead Rd. His vehicle was discovered there at 8:30 p.m. that evening. Meisner is still missing. It is not known where Geoffrey, a devoted father of four daughters ages 5 to 11, could have gone.

Meisner's family has told the media that his disappearance is very out of character; he always stays in close contact with his family. According to a Facebook page, they are fearful that Meisner may have met with foul play, or that he possibly suffered a delayed reaction from a recent martial arts event in which he received several blows to the head. They worry that Meisner could be on the streets and confused. They had just moved into a new home a few weeks prior to his disappearance.

Meisner is described as Caucasian, 6' 1" tall, 275 lbs, with a large muscular build. He is bald, has brown eyes and a brown goatee. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt and a brown hoodie.

Police are asking anyone who may have seen Meisner or his truck, to call the Kelowna RCMP at (250) 762-3300, or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

12/13/08: Thomas McKay, Jr., 24, Orland Park, IL

Tommy McKay
Thomas McKay, Jr., 24, was last seen by loved ones on Dec. 13, 2008 when he unexpectedly walked out of his father's home in the 7900 block of Wheeler Drive in Orland Park, Ill., 7:15 a.m., taking his wallet (containing about $200) and his cell phone, which had been turned off.

McKay had been staying with his father in Orland Park after his mother, Kathy, moved out of their home in the 12000 block of Josephine Drive in Mokena. His father, Tom, said McKay had planned to live in the Mokena house alone, but it was causing him to become more distressed.

McKay had a history of emotional issues stemming from a series of tragic events in high school that damaged him emotionally. In the week before his disappearance, his parents said he had become increasingly depressed and was having paranoid fears of being taken by the CIA. On Dec. 11, two days before his disappearance, McKay was taken to the hospital but was not admitted because of a lack of health insurance. On Dec. 12, the distressed young man sought the solace of priest after taking several trains to Oak Park. The priest contacted his father, who planned to pick him up, but McKay arrived back home in a cab. Later that night, he got very depressed and paranoid again, then on Saturday morning, he just walked out of the house.

For more than two months, family and friends passed out fliers, scoured homeless shelters, churches, and the Internet in the hopes of finding a clue of the missing man.

McKay's fully-clothed body was found in a creek in the city of Tinley Park on March 2, 2009.

McKay's body was discovered by a Park District employee near 167th Street and 80th Avenue while cleaning up debris along a creek in McCarthy Park. The body was lying face down in about 8 inches of water and snagged on a beaver dam. Tinley Park Police Commander Pat McCain told the media it had been in the water for some time, but it was not clear where the point of entry was or why McKay ended up in the creek. He said foul play did not seem to be involved. A wallet and identification were found on his body. McKay, a devout Catholic, was still wearing religious jewelry.

Thomas McKay began drawing away from loved ones while he was a junior in high school. He lost two of his closest friends and then his 38-year old uncle in separate car accidents all within a year.

His mother told the Chicago Tribune in February, "Trying to cope with three tremendous losses is a heavy burden for any teenager to handle. It became too much for him to deal with by himself."

Thomas P. McKay was the beloved son of Cathy and Thomas (Denise) McKay; loving brother of Shannon and Cody McKay; dear grandson of Joseph and Anna Drabik and Judy Truty.

He was a 2001 graduate of Lincoln-Way East High School and was attending classes at Joliet Junior College. He worked retail jobs to earn money for school.

He was described as quiet and shy. He was an animal lover and often looked after his 22-year old sister's two boxers. He also had a cat named Xena: Warrior Princess.

A funeral Mass was held on March 9, 2009 at St. Mary Church in Mokena with Interment at Resurrection Cemetery.

Mathieu LeClair
Mathieu LeClair, 20, a cadet studying engineering at Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, was reported missing on Monday, February 27, 2012.

Two days later, on Wednesday, February 29, 2012, LeClair's body was recovered from the waters of Lake Ontario near the expansive campus.

The National Investigation Service, which has jurisdiction over military personnel on Canadian Forces' properties, is investigating the death. Capt. Karina Holder, spokeswoman for the National Investigation Service, told the Journal, "foul play is not suspected, the investigation remains ongoing, and no details as to the cause of death may be released at this time."

CBS News reported, "The military says it may never confirm what happened at the request of LeClair's family."

New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal stated, "LeClair's death is an eerie reminder of the 2003 disappearance of RMC cadet Joe Grozelle. The 21-year-old's body was found on the shore of the Cataraqui River not far from the college three weeks after he went missing. The investigation of his death went on for years and resulted in a 2008 coroner's inquest, which failed to determined how and when he died."

About Mathieu LeClair

LeClair's mother, Mireille Basque, told the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal that her son was "driven," and hard working and had wanted to join the Air Force since he was a young child. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Cadets in his hometown of Saint John, NB, when he was 12 years old.

She said he was disciplined, ambitious and organized from a young age.

"I never had to worry about homework or his uniform being ready for Cadets. There was never an issue," she said.

LeClair was part of Simonds Squadron #527 and was still very young when he announced to his mother that he wanted to go to the Royal Military College to be in the Air Force. While in the Cadets, he rose to the title of Warrant Officer II Band Leader and was selected for an International Cadet Exchange Program where he traveled to Washington DC and Texas. He remained in the program throughout high school, in addition to playing high school basketball and being involved in drama.

"He was involved in everything," Basque told the Journal. "He was always in a good mood and he wanted people to be happy."

He graduated from Simonds High School in 2009 and was awarded an $80,000 Cadet Scholarship to attend Royal Military College. LeClair was in the process of completing his third year in an engineering program and was a member of the school's basketball team.

Capt. Peter Smith, who met LeClair in the Air Cadets, described him as an exceptional young man with tremendous potential.

“He was so young and such a bright future. Such a good person, such a good caring kid who had such great leadership, it was a shock,” he told CBS News.

According to his obituary, Mathieu is survived by his parents Mireille Basque and Danny LeClair, stepmother Gladys, and two brothers, plus many friends and family members who will miss him dearly.

"He had eyes that sparkled brightly and a big beautiful smile. He was kind and generous to all. Many were aware of this young man’s presence. He was an extremely social person and a gifted athlete. He loved his family and always enjoyed any special holiday spent at Mémére’s house...Mathieu was a dedicated and an extremely hard worker who would always go the extra mile for an employer. Mathieu was a tremendously bright and gifted young man who touched many lives. A life that touches others is a life that will go on forever. Mathieu will live on in us and in our memories with great love and much fondness. Mathieu was a very, very special young Man."

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated from St. Joachim’s Church in Saint John on March 5, 2012 with Interment at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Upper Golden Grove, NB.

Donations to the Royal Canadian Air Cadets Simonds Squadron #527 or P.R.O. Kids would be appreciated by the family.

Today marks 10 years for family of Chris Jenkins

The anniversary of a missing loved one's disappearance is often an incredibly painful time for a family.

As one parent told me, living without a loved one isn't something you can just get over. Time doesn't heal all wounds, it only provides you with some distance from the pain, or makes things a little more bearable. As time goes on, even without having many answers as to what happened to your loved one, you may learn to live with a "new normal" and figure out how to get through the day. But the anniversary of a loved one's disappearance or death can often shake the foundation of the new normal that you're trying to create. As the date approaches, raw emotion bubbles up to the surface. Painful reminders can creep in about those who were less than helpful or kind. You may try to remain positive and to focus on celebrating the life of the loved one, but memories can be bittersweet reminders of what was lost.

I feel for the families who have to go through this. At the very least, they deserve to have some answers and to know what happened to their loved one.

Chris Jenkins

Today marks the 10-year anniversary of the disappearance of Chris Jenkins. Ten years ago today, he went out with friends to celebrate a fun-filled Halloween. He never expected to meet with foul play. Nor did his family.

I can't speak for the Jenkins family, I can only imagine what this day must be like for them. Luckily, they are positive people and remain committed to each other and to enriching the lives of others. But it can't be easy. Chris's homicide is still unsolved; no one has been brought to justice. His family does not even have clear answers as to what happened to him.

Ten years ago, the slogan on Chris's missing poster was, "Someone Knows Something." I think that is still true today. I am convinced that there are people out there who could shed light on this case.

If you know anything (no matter how small) about the night Chris Jenkins disappeared or his death, please call the Minneapolis Homicide Unit at (612) 673-2941.

Jonathan Dailey
Source: Facebook
Jonathan Dailey, 23, a North Carolina native who was taking a semester off from graduate-level course work at Boston Architectural College, was last seen by his longtime friend and roommate, Miles Smith, on Oct. 2, 2012.

According to the Boston Globe, Smith last saw Jonathan the evening of Oct. 2 in their apartment on Gardner Street in Boston’s Allston neighborhood after Jonathan came home from work. The pair had some pizza, watched an episode of the “The Office,” and chatted about how their day went. Then Smith went to bed at about 9 p.m. It was the last time Jonathan was reportedly seen.

As days passed, Jonathan’s cell phone was not answering calls. His friends and family grew concerned at not having contact with him. Jonathan was reported missing on Friday, Oct. 5 after he failed to show up to the American Apparel store on Brattle Street in Cambridge where he worked as a sales associate. While Smith said it was not unusual for his friend to step out of their apartment, it was totally out of character for Jonathan to disappear. He also left behind a computer, all his camping equipment, and a number of other items at the apartment.

Jonathan’s parents, Bruce and Donna Dailey, arrived in Boston over the weekend. They worked with Jonathan’s friends to search the places Jonathan frequented, distribute fliers across the city and ask for tips about their son's whereabouts. They worked with missing-person organizations like the Charlotte-based Kristen Foundation and used social media to spread the word about his disappearance. While the search effort mounted, his family prayed for his return and tried to hold onto some hope that he maybe just needed some peace and solitude. Dailey's sister, Robyn, called the experience "emotionally gut-wrenching."

At 7:25 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9, a week after Jonathan disappeared, a Boston University rowing coach spotted a body in the Charles River near the Boston University Bridge. The location was about a mile from Dailey’s apartment. The body was identified through dental records as Jonathan Dailey.

According to reports, the body was found at the bottom of the river, bound with chains at the ankles and tied to a cinder block. It appeared to have been in the water for several days. Jake Wark, a spokesperson for the Suffolk District Attorney’s office said in a statement, “We will not be discussing evidence recovered at or near the scene of this morning’s recovery effort.” He added that a thorough and comprehensive investigation of the facts and circumstances of Dailey’s death is underway by the State Police.

Investigators are still trying to determine whether Dailey was a victim of foul play or suicide. The medical examiner has not yet determined the cause or manner of death. On Oct. 13, Wark told People magazine, “They are pursuing it as a death investigation. The medical examiner has asked for additional specialized testing, toxicology and so forth.

Police said they are looking at all possibilities behind the young man’s death, from suicide to foul play.

Smith said he could not think of anyone who might want to harm Dailey. “He’s very charismatic, a great friend to all he met.”

Jonathan had no history of drugs, alcohol, or mental illness and he did have a girlfriend.

Dailey’s body was the second body found in the Charles River in two days. On Oct. 1, the body of a 62-year-old man was found at about 8:15 a.m. near the Boston University boathouse. Authorities have said they do not consider his death to be suspicious, nor do they believe there to be linked to Dailey’s death.

About Jonathan Dailey

Jonathan Dailey was born and raised in Charlotte, N.C. and attended Northwest School of the Arts. He played violin and piano, performing in local children's orchestras.

He then went to Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., where he studied architectural technology and design, alongside friend Miles Smith. Jonathan’s family said he loved architecture and never wavered from that path as a career. The friends both earned their bachelor’s degrees. After graduation, they moved to Massachusetts to attend a graduate program at Boston Architectural College and were roommates. Jonathan’s family says he loved being in Boston.

The friends were in their second year of graduate school at Boston Architectural College and were both taking a semester off. According to his family, Jonathan was not enrolled because of financial reasons.

The friends were close and often bonded by indulging in many adventures. As recently as several weeks ago, they traveled to Maine where they visited a gorge, camped, swam, and cliff-dived. “He’s an Eagle Scout, and we both love adventure, but we always prepare,” said Smith.

Smith described his friend as very creative and intelligent, with an eccentric side.

Jonathan Dailey leaves behind two siblings, brother Kevin and sister Robyn. "We are all in agony, disbelief and shock right now, "Robyn wrote on a Facebook page created in Jonathan’s honor. "Not only from the helplessness of having Jon be missing and the overwhelming grief of knowing he has died, but also because of the horror of not knowing what happened,” she said.

A Web page has been created in Jonathan's honor. A memorial service and celebration to honor Jonathan was held November 4th at Morningstar Fellowship Church in Fort Mill, SC.

Found Safe!

Michael Davids has been found safe!  In a statement Saturday night, Tricia Reis from the CUE Center for Missing Persons said, "Thank you all for your responses to a family in need. This is truly the outcome we all hoped for!" No further details have been released.

Michael Davids, 21, left his home on Valley Drive in Andover, Minn. at
9 p.m. on Saturday, December 1. He was going to a friend's house two miles away to play video games. Davids did not make it to the friend's house and has not been seen or heard from since.

Family says this is outside of Michael's normal behavior. The North Carolina-based CUE Center for missing persons is assisting the family with the search efforts.

"We are really concerned for his safety," Cue founder Monica Caison told David Lohr of the Huffington Post. "His family does not believe he took off on his own. I've been told it would be 100% out of character for him to do that. [His family is] completely distraught; worrying about him."

His family says he may be driving a 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid with Minnesota license plate 3AK-170.

Davids is described as 6'4" tall, 220 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. He also has an ear piercing in his left ear. He was last seen wearing old black slip-on shoes, no socks, black knee length shorts, t-shirt, black zip up hooded sweatshirt.

Gabriel Smith
Gabriel Michael Smith, 27, known as Gabe, was last seen at 2:15 a.m. on December 8, 2007, while walking east in downtown Ludington, Mich. near James and Flier Streets, presumably on his way home from a local bar in the business district. He was reported missing two days later when he failed to show up for work.

Family, friends and many members of the community searched for Smith in the area between where he was last seen, his home on the 700 block of Fifth Street, and Pomorski’s Tavern at 1302 S Madison Street where his truck was parked. Police believed that to get back to his truck or to home, he may have tried to cross the Pere Marquette Lake at the Washington Avenue bridge. They looked for signs that Smith may have fallen through the ice. During one search by the Kent County Sheriff's office attempted to search the water while a tugboat broke up ice in the channel. The ice was refreezing and sealing up behind them and the search was called off. During a later search, temperatures were rising and ice in the bayou was starting to thaw, again making the search difficult.

On March 27, 2008, Smith's body was found in nearby Lake Michigan by an employee of the Lake Michigan Car Ferry who was aboard the SS Spartan. An autopsy by forensic pathologist Dr. Stephan Cohle later determined that Smith had accidentally drowned and most likely was intoxicated at the time of his death.

The Press News Service reported that, "The autopsy found ethanol (alcohol) levels in Smith's blood and urine were elevated, but noted the potential for postmortem production of ethanol made it difficult to determine a blood alcohol level. According to the report, Smith "was known to have been drinking for many hours prior to last being known to be alive." Cohle also added that Smith had a history of alcohol abuse."

Authorities believe Smith was trying to cut across the ice on a narrow section of the lake when he fell through and drowned.

Gabriel was employed by Whitehall Industries. According to their Web site, the company is located on Sixth Street in Ludington and manufactures automotive sunroof tracks and other precision aluminum extrusions and machine fabricated components.

Update: On March 16, 2012 the Chicago Tribune reported that a Buick LeSabre pulled from the Chicago River has a vehicle identification number matching the car that Michael Jansson had been driving when he disappeared in 2001. Authorities are awaiting the identification of bones found inside the car using DNA testing.

The car was found in the North Branch of the Chicago River near Blackhawk Street on Saturday, December 15, by using new side-scanning sonar equipment. The vehicle was upside down and partially buried. Only about two feet of the car was visible. The area had been searched in 2001 after Jansson vanished, before the sonar technology was available, and nothing was found.

The location of the car was within a few blocks of where Michael was last seen. (See map.)

On March 9, 2001, 21-year old Michael "Mikey" Dean Jansson, a resident of Lincolnwood, Ill., went to a party at the Biology Bar at 1520 N. Fremont Street in Chicago with his oldest friend, Joe, and Joe's cousin, Fari, and Joe's girlfriend, Magaly, who drove the group in her car. The group arrived shortly after midnight. Sometime between 1:30 and 2:15 a.m., Michael borrowed Joe's cell phone asked for the keys to Magaly's car, a Buick LeSabre, which was parked around the corner, so he could make a call. Around this same time, Michael and another patron exchanged words. The other patron was in a party of four or five, already on his way out, when the near altercation took place. The bouncers stepped in before it could escalate, but club policy required that all of the patrons involved in a dispute leave the premises. Michael, according to bouncer Miles Roberts, was grateful to have avoided a fight and possible police involvement, and went outside to wait for his friends (Chicago Reader). Michael still had Joe's phone and Magaly's car keys. It was about 2:30 a.m.

While Michael waited outside, the other patron who had been kicked out drove by the bar several times. Roberts noticed the guy and his friends cruising past the club entrance giving dirty looks to Michael. He flagged down a patrolling squad car and told them of the situation. The officer drove off in the direction the car went. The light-colored four-door Infinity never returned after that, says Roberts.

Joe's cousin, Fari, said he had checked on Michael two or three times after he was kicked out, but Michael never mentioned the menacing behavior from the occupants of the Infinity. Fari doesn't believe the men were hanging around the club. He says he last saw Michael around 3:15 a.m., 20 to 30 minutes before the club closed. Michael had moved the car to the front of the club and was planning to wait for them. Fari told him they'd be back out in ten minutes, but Michael asked him to not take so long. Ultimately, the friends did not come out for until 3:35 or 3:45 a.m., and by this time Michael was already gone, along with their ride. (Chicago Reader). They thought he left because he was mad or, possibly, because the police told him to leave.

Roberts's account differs slightly in that he remembers that Michael's friends only checked on him once, and this was after he had prompted them to do so. He says that Michael abruptly left the club about 2:30 a.m., which is an earlier estimate of the time he was last seen, but no one was really watching the clock. "He drove off going northbound," said Roberts, "and I didn't pay attention to see whether he had turned right going towards the lakefront or left going back to the expressway."(Chicago Reader).

After leaving the club, Michael's friend Joe used a friend's cell phone and called Michael three to five times. He got no answer. They drove around looking for Mike and the car, and even stopped at his sister's house and also flagged down a policeman. Nothing yielded any clues. At around 8:30 that morning, Joe again tried to call Michael, but the phone was answered by an unknown person who wanted a reward for returning it to him. The man told Joe that he had to go to court, but to call him back in two hours. When Joe called, he didn't pick up, and he stopped answering the phone after that.

Joe learned later that both his mother and his cousin, Fari, had also tried calling the phone. At around 1:30 p.m., Fari talked to a man who he believed to be African-American who answered the phone. Pretending to be Joe, Fari made arrangements to meet the man to give him $50 for the phone. "He was like, 'Meet me on Madison and Kostner. I'll be outside,'" Fari told the Chicago Reader. "I remember he said something like, 'Don't be shady about it. Don't bring no cops and stuff.'" Fari told the paper that he had no intention of meeting the man, especially when he had to be to work at 2 p.m. But Joe was going to be picking him up to give him a ride, so he planned to tell him about the plan. However, Joe fell asleep and never showed up to take him to work.

That same afternoon, Joe's mother called him twice and was alarmed to hear the stranger's voice answering her son's phone. Not knowing that Michael was missing or that her son had been with him the night before, she assumed the phone had been stolen and immediately had the service terminated. According to the Reader, "Just before it was cut off, the person with the phone placed two more calls, one at 3:16 PM and another at 3:17--both to the number of Ahmed Ali, one of the party's organizers and the person who'd driven [Joe] home that morning." Ali says that he had called Joe's phone only to find out if Joe had found Michael and the car. He recalls talking to the man with the phone--who may have said that the phone had been dropped--then he was told the battery was about to die and the connection broke.

A record of calls that were made from the phone have since shown up on Joe's cell phone bill. Some calls were made to relatives of people who work at the club, although no one will admit using the phone. The family is considering the possibility that the phone was simply dropped inside the club and has nothing to do with Michael's disappearance.

The cell phone was never recovered.

Michael's family, which circulated fliers about disappearance, described Michael to the media as "a very athletic person" who loved "all types of sports, but in particular soccer and baseball." They added that he "enjoys foods such as pizza, tacos and grilled cheese" and "is very good with computers." Michael also regularly babysat his three-year old nephew and is very family oriented. It is very uncharacteristic for Michael to leave without telling anyone where his going." Because of this, his family worried that Michael may have been car jacked, or perhaps even abducted. Jansson was reportedly a heavy gambler through off-shore betting services, and he was wearing expensive jewelry on the night he disappeared. He also had previous arrest for cocaine possession in 1999, although he had since cleaned up his act.

Nick Wilcox
Missing since 1/1/13
Milwaukee, Wisc.
Nick Wilcox, 24, celebrated the new year with his girlfriend, Kelly, and other friends at the Irish Rec Room, a downtown Milwaukee, Wis. bar, on the 1000 block of North Old World Third Street in Milwaukee, Wis. Employees reportedly kicked Nick out of the bar, and he was last seen between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. on Jan. 1. His family frantically spent New Year's Day trying to find him.

According to an article in the Lake Country Reporter, "Rumors have circulated that Wilcox was spotted outside a Qdoba restaurant in Milwaukee’s downtown at about 3 a.m., but [Sgt. Stan] Stanmeyer [of the Milwaukee Police Department] said he could not confirm that information."

Police are still following up on several leads, but for now, the bar serves as search headquarters. Kelly Vecitis, a managing partner for the bar, has told the media that anyone who would like to volunteer is welcome to come to the bar, and staff would point them in the direction of the search.

About 60 people showed up on January 6th alone to search for the missing man. Search parties split up along Milwaukee's east side and covered a possible paths that Nick might have taken to get back to his residence.

On January 7, one group started their search at Alterra on the Lake and then headed north on the Oak Leaf Trail. Another group started around North Avenue — near where Wilcox lives.

Nick Wilcox is a graduate of Kettle Moraine High School and a student and the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. He is known to be adventurous, having once went on a week-long hike up to Long’s Peak in Colorado with members of a youth group. His father, Nick Wilcox, described him as a "good kid."

Nick Wilcox is blond-haired and blue-eyed, 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs approximately 180 pounds. He was wearing a dark gray shirt with dark jeans and black shoes.

Anyone with information about his disappearance is encouraged to call the MPD at (414) 935-7403.
